MicroLoan Foundation Australia provides an innovative approach to poverty reduction. We offer a long term solution to families and we solely support women in rural areas of some of the poorest countries in the world.
Below are some of the key reasons behind why we have chosen this unique approach.
MicroLoan works to change the lives of some of the poorest people on the planet. Malawi is one of the poorest countries, with over 74% of the Malawian population living in poverty.
Large proportions of the Malawian populations live in rural areas, and depend upon unreliable rain-fed farming to make a living. This is not sustainable and means that many families are stuck in poverty. Access to services such as schooling and health care is often difficult in these areas. There are limited employment and income-generating opportunities. All of these factors mean levels of poverty in rural areas are disproportionately high.
We want to see an end to global poverty. And we believe the best way for this to be achieved is through a sustainable approach that empowers individuals. We believe in giving hope, not handouts. Our training and support provide women with the tools they need to work their way out of poverty, providing a long-term, sustainable solution, not a quick fix.
In Malawi, women are more likely to be poor and at risk of hunger because of the discrimination they consistently face in education, health care, employment and control of assets. Women also face much higher levels of financial exclusion than me, so often struggle to access capital to invest or facilities to save. All of these issues keep many women in poverty, and contribute to the fact that 60% of the world’s poorest people are women and girls. Evidence has shown that when a woman generates her own income, she is likely to re-invest 90% of it into her family and community. That’s why we support women.
Our model works. Here’s why
Our model is simple, and highly effective. It consistently proves to increase household income and savings, and is based on these four foundations:
We provide innovative, on-going business and financial training and mentoring to all of the women we work with. Understanding profit and loss, and market research help to ensure the success of the women’s businesses.
Our loans and training are provided to groups of women. This enables members to draw on collective support to overcome challenges and celebrate successes.
Hand-ups, not handouts
We provide loans, not hand-outs. This provides a more accurate replication of the real world, and facilitates long-term independence.
We develop long-term relationships and support women with successive loans and training until they are on their feet and can operate independently of any support from us
